Gum Disease Prevention
Professional Gum Disease Treatment in Clinton Township, MI
If you have (or think you have) gum disease, Pleasant Dental has answers.
Gum disease, or Periodontitis, is a serious infection in which tissues and bone are compromised by bad oral hygiene. The word “periodontal” translates to "around the tooth", and at Pleasant Dental we reinforce gum health to all of our patients. Healthy gum tissue fits like a cuff or collar around each tooth. Where the gum line meets the tooth there is a slight space, usually less than three millimeters deep. Although this is a small area, this is a great deal of space for infection to form! We stay up to date with the latest information about gum health to ensure that our clients can prevent gum disease.
Some of the symptoms of gum disease include:
- Easily irritated gums that can bleed
- Swollen, tender and red gums
- Gums that have noticeably grown away from your teeth
- Constant bad breath
- Separating or loose teeth
- Noticeable pus between teeth
How do I professionally treat gum disease?
Depending on the severity of the gum disease determined by Dr. Albaghdadi, there are a few different ways to treat it. He may prescribe a topical antiseptic, antibiotic or even Penicillin. This is the most basic form of treatment and, when paired with proper oral hygiene, can sufficiently clear up gum disease. If the gum disease is more severe and is affecting a large area, Dr. Albaghdadi may remove the unhealthy tissue and even recommend surgery (a gingivectomy or gingivoplasty).
Is gum disease preventable?
Completely! By properly brushing teeth, flossing and following a healthy diet, gum disease can be avoided. At Pleasant Dental, we recommend a number of options to clients of all ages during each visit. We believe that prevention is the best treatment of gum disease that there is, so we start our young patients with the resources they’ll need to have a healthy smile for the rest of their lives!
